5 Risks of Using Public WiFi Without a VPN
Security
Public WiFi is convenient, but it is also a shared network. Airports, hotels, cafes, and conference venues can all expose you to extra risk if your device is not protected.
1. Fake hotspots
Attackers can create networks with names that look legitimate. If you connect to the wrong one, your traffic may pass through infrastructure they control.
2. Traffic inspection
Encrypted HTTPS protects most modern websites, but local network observers may still see domains, timing, and connection metadata.
3. Session theft
Weak or misconfigured services can expose session cookies or tokens. This is less common than it used to be, but it is still a reason to avoid sensitive activity on unknown networks.
4. Device exposure
Public networks can make nearby devices easier to probe if sharing settings or firewall rules are too permissive.
5. Location tracking
The network operator may be able to associate your device, visit time, and approximate location.
Use HTTPS, keep your operating system updated, disable unnecessary sharing, and use a trustworthy VPN when the network is not one you control.
