Static vs Dynamic IP Address
Networking
A static IP address stays the same over time. A dynamic IP address can change when your ISP refreshes your connection, your router reconnects, or your network assignment changes.
Most home users have dynamic IP addresses. Static IPs are more common for businesses, servers, remote access, hosting, and specialist network setups.
Dynamic IP addresses
Dynamic IPs are easier for ISPs to manage. Your address might stay the same for weeks or months, but it is not guaranteed. Restarting a router may or may not change it.
Static IP addresses
Static IPs are useful when other systems need to reach you reliably. Examples include hosting a server, running business VPN access, allowlisting an office connection, or managing remote equipment.
Which one do you need?
Most people do not need a static IP. If your goal is privacy, a static IP may be worse because it is more consistent. If your goal is remote access or hosting, it can be useful.
